Attend to the Attic and Basement

Often attics and basements are untapped resources that can take a lot of clutter-pressure off the rest of the house. If these areas are unfinished, only durable items can be stored there. Moisture can ruin clothing and fragile items, unless they’re stored in airtight containers. And even then, temperature extremes can be damaging.
However, if you paint walls and floors with a product that seals and waterproofs, you’ll give items stored there more protection, and the area will be more attractive. With a coat of bright paint and plenty of lighting, an attic or basement can be an inviting laundry center, home office, workshop, or craft room. And it will lure you to return items more consistently to their proper places.
In both areas, follow the “rules” of storage. Designate zones, label each zone with a sign, and group like items in labeled containers. Make a master list of the contents of each box, and leave it near the entrance.
